Nona Grey’s story reaches its shattering conclusion in the third instalment of Book of the Ancestor.
THEY CAME AGAINST HER AS A CHILD. NOW THEY FACE THE WOMAN.
The ice is advancing, the Corridor narrowing, and the empire is under siege from the Scithrowl in the east and the Durns in the west. Everywhere, the emperor’s armies are in retreat.
Nona faces the final challenges that must be overcome if she is to become a full sister in the order of her choice. But it seems unlikely that Nona and her friends will have time to earn a nun’s habit before war is on their doorstep.
Even a warrior like Nona cannot hope to turn the tide of war.
The shiphearts offer strength that she might use to protect those she loves, but it’s a power that corrupts. A final battle is coming in which she will be torn between friends, unable to save them all. A battle in which her own demons will try to unmake her.
A battle in which hearts will be broken, lovers lost, thrones burned.
HOLY SISTER completes the Book of the Ancestor trilogy that began with RED SISTER and GREY SISTER. A ground-breaking series, it has established Mark Lawrence as one of the most exciting new voices in modern speculative fiction.

- Mark Lawrence has a wonderful way with words, characters and interesting plots. I enjoy all his books as they show the world of fantasy from a different angle. His world building is amazing as are his characters. I will miss Nona, Zara, Jula, kettle, Apple, Glass and all the other characters.
- My favourite Mark Lawrence fantasy trilogy... A must read for fans of fantasy
- Loved this series
- First two were better, but had to finish
- Fantastic finish to a fantastic series. Only bad part about it was that it was over when I finished it.
- Loved this trilogy, the firt two were my favorite, even though this one wasn't bad
- In Holy Sister, Mark Lawrence takes us once again to the Convent of Sweet Mercy, where our mildly terrifying protagonist Nona is nearing the end of her studies, and will soon face a choice of how she will serve - will she be a Holy Sister, and spend her days in piety and contemplation, or take the robes of a Red Sister - a fearsome human weapon unmatched in hand-tohand combat. Or perhaps she will engage in the epy games of the grey sisters, or the magic of the Mystics? Only Nona knows where The Path will take her. In the meantime, war is brewing, and it may take all the skills she has just to stay alive...
This story trockets along from start to finish, blending heist movie elements with magic, treachery, violence and some truly machiavellian machinations, and it was all I could do not to devour it all in one go - and the only reason I didn't was because this was the last book in the series, and I didn't want to say goodby to a character as ciompelling as Nona. By turns brilliant, surly, loyal and lonely, she is flawed and sometimes unlikable, but I was always rooting for her. She is no Mary Sue - she earns every reward, every skill, through literal blood, tears, and sheer stubborn determination (even if she sometimes wins out through literally throwing herself at an issue like an enraged bull).
I've said it before if Voldemort met the novices of Sweet Mercy, he would be a greasy puddle within about 15 minutes.
Overall, it felt like a satisfying conclusion to the story of Nona and her Sisters.
