The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks Rebecca Skloot Reviews

  • I ordered this book to read for one of my Ethics classes. I was worried about so much assigned reading to complete in one week, but it turned out to be a book that you just can't put down.

It still amazes me that this is a woman's real life story, the story of her family, and how they have impacted science and anyone who works or benefits from the use of cellular research. That means just about every single person is connected to Henrietta in one way or another.

This was a great book that I'm so glad I read. I learned a lot and it kept me entertained and fascinated for days. It will really change your perspective and make you appreciate this woman's contribution to our scientific and health fields.
  • From the very beginning there was something uncanny about the cancer cells on Henrietta Lacks’s cervix. Even before killing Lacks herself in 1951, they took on a life of their own. Removed during a biopsy and cultured without her permission, the HeLa cells (named from the first two letters of her first and last names) reproduced boisterously in a lab at Johns Hopkins — the first human cells ever to do so. HeLa became an instant biological celebrity, traveling to research labs all over the world. Meanwhile Lacks, a vivacious 31-year-old African-American who had once been a tobacco farmer, tended her five children and endured scarring radiation treatments in the hospital’s “colored” ward.
In “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks,” Rebecca Skloot introduces us to the “real live woman,” the children who survived her, and the interplay of race, poverty, science and one of the most important medical discoveries of the last 100 years. Skloot narrates the science lucidly, tracks the racial politics of medicine thoughtfully and tells the Lacks family’s often painful history with grace. She also confronts the spookiness of the cells themselves, intrepidly crossing into the spiritual plane on which the family has come to understand their mother’s continued presence in the world. Science writing is often just about “the facts.” Skloot’s book, her first, is far deeper, braver and more wonderful.
This work has the most human of stories at its core, and never deviates from that important, and often heartbreaking, humanity. When science appears, it does so effortlessly, with explanations of cell anatomy or techniques like “fluorescence in situ hybridization” seamlessly worked into descriptions of the coloured wards of Johns Hopkins hospital to Lacks’s hometown of Clover, Virginia.
But The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks is not a comfortable read. I visibly winced at descriptions of Henrietta’s blackened, burned skin after multiple rounds of devastating radiation treatments. I put the book down with a heavy sigh after reading about the experiments that black Americans have been unwittingly subjected to over the years. I cried twice, at events that I can’t talk about without seriously spoiling the book. But it is uplifting too, particularly in a stand-out chapter where Henrietta’s children, Deborah and Zakariyya, visit a cancer researcher to see their mother’s cells under a microscope.

All of this is to be expected of a book that refuses to shy away from tackling important themes – the interplay between science and ethics, the question of who owns our bodies, and the history of racism in the US. And yet for all its grand scope, skilful writing and touching compassion, there is one simple element that makes As a final thought, I was struck by the parallels between Henrietta’s cells and her story. Henrietta’s entire family history was eventually condensed into a small sliver of cells that you could carry in a glass vial. They have achieved immortality, used by scientists throughout the world. Similarly, her entire life has been condensed into a moving tale and an exceptional book that you could read in a comfortable day. By right, it will achieve the same immortal status.
  • What a great book. My previous boss gave me a copy to read and I then bought a copy off of . I'm sending it to my cousin. Its a must read for anyone, regardless of race or ethnicity.
  • This could have been the amazing story of how a poor black woman's cells are used to combat, cancer, HIV , HPV, polio, and many more. And it is, a mother of five goes to John's Hopkins for a mass in her abdomen, a particularly aggressive form of cervical cancer, likely caused from HPV or other STD's she caught from her philandering husband. it's the casual way the medical community used (and profited from) cells samples from patients. In a world before informed consent, indeed before ethical testing laws, a young, pretty, vivacious woman deals with the culture of non disclosure to patients. A world where the doctor's word is sacrosanct. As a nurse I found this fascinating, people are much more protected now.

But it's more than that, it's the story of Henrietta's family finding out 20 years later that their mother's cells are alive, and helping medical science! They deal with anger, disbelief, and a feeling of betrayal, since others have made money from her Henrietta's cells and they, ironically, can't afford health insurance! Skloot does a wonderful job describing the ongoing difficulties meeting the family and gaining their trust, describing their emotions and reactions (including superstition) in a way that humanized them. Many books have been written about the HeLa (HEnrietta LAcks) cells and the their effect on medical science. This book tells you what kind of person she was, and how it affected her family. One of the best books I've read in a while.
  • The first thing I think about after completing a book is - did I enjoy it? I absolutely did enjoy 'The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks'. And that is despite my lack of initial interest in the book jacket synopsis. Author Rebecca Skloot wrote an entertaining and very informative book. But as with a number of other reviewers, I have a lot of different thoughts about the book, some good and some not so good.
The book is really several parallel stories tied closely together. First, there's Henrietta Lack's own story and those of the HeLa cell line developed from her biopsy tissues in 1951. Then there is the story of the Lacks family; impoverished, poorly educated, and ignorant of their mother's medical signifiance. Finally, there's the author's own story about her multi-year effort of research, interviews, and writing Henrietta Lacks' story. At times, the intertwined stories seemed to get in each others way. The disappointing thing to me, is that Henrietta's story itself, gets rather short shrift while the peripheral stories of Henrietta's children, grandchildren, etc.; as well as the author's story, take up the lion's share of the book.
These are fairly minor complaints, however. The book is unique, interesting, and most importantly, a joy to read and I recommend it.

Part of JRP|Ringer's innovative Documents series, published with Les Presses du Réel and dedicated to critical writings, this publication comprises a unique collection of interviews by Hans Ulrich Obrist mapping the development of the curatorial field--from early independent curators in the 1960s and 70s and the experimental institutional programs developed in Europe and the U.S. through the inception of Documenta and the various biennales and fairs--with pioneering curators Anne D'Harnoncourt, Werner Hoffman, Jean Leering, Franz Meyer, Seth Siegelaub, Walter Zanini, Johannes Cladders, Lucy Lippard, Walter Hopps, Pontus Hulten and Harald Szeemann. Speaking of Szeemann on the occasion of this legendary curator's death in 2005, critic Aaron Schuster summed up, "the image we have of the curator today the curator-as-artist, a roaming, freelance designer of exhibitions, or in his own witty formulation, a 'spiritual guest worker'... If artists since Marcel Duchamp have affirmed selection and arrangement as legitimate artistic strategies, was it not simply a matter of time before curatorial practice--itself defined by selection and arrangement--would come to be seen as an art that operates on the field of art itself?"

"The book creates a history of curating through interviews of important art curators and writers of the 20th and 21st century. Hans Ulrich Obrist is a central figure in contemporary curating and here he proves his commitment to it with a series of references to important curating events of the past and current century.
For someone with an interest in curating I can say this is a great book to start increasing your knowledge in the subject and because it is essentially composed of interviews it is very easy to read."

  • I couldn't resist the title "Curatorspeak" for this review as in fact it is "curatorspeak" in the way that curators talk together. Well, Hans Ulrich Obrist have his model for interviewing people, a kind of laidback easy to read informal conversation. Most of the time it works great and the book gives great insight into the different curatorial approaches that his collegues and predecessors have towards exhibition-making. Sometimes, however, the informality of the conversation don't really give you a in depth-perpsective of what the curator he talks to actually thinks about exhibition-making. It could of course be that he doesn't have very deep thoughts on the subject, and maybe he is (bacause it is mainy men) more working from intuitien and tacit knowledge. However, all in all it is a great introduction to curators who have been signinficant contributors to the development of exhibition-making since WW2 and in that respect it fulfills the title "A brief history of curating".

"Brilliant, beautifully organized, exceedingly readable."―Philip Roth

World-renowned Shakespeare scholar Stephen Greenblatt explores the playwright’s insight into bad (and often mad) rulers.

Examining the psyche―and psychoses―of the likes of Richard III, Macbeth, Lear, and Coriolanus, Greenblatt illuminates the ways in which William Shakespeare delved into the lust for absolute power and the disasters visited upon the societies over which these characters rule. Tyrant shows that Shakespeare’s work remains vitally relevant today, not least in its probing of the unquenchable, narcissistic appetites of demagogues and the self-destructive willingness of collaborators who indulge them.

Ebook Tyrant Shakespeare on Politics Stephen Greenblatt Books

"Tyrant is an examination of Shakespeare's exploration of government, society, and tyrannical figures throughout his plays. Chapters are sorted by topic (the influence of party politics on the rise of tyrants, the abuse for populism for political gain, the types and importance of enablers, the influence of personality and mental illness on tyrannical behavior, etcetera) and tend to examine one or two plays/characters at a time, complete with helpful quotations citing act, scene, and line. I only vaguely remember reading Hamlet and Macbeth in highschool, and was pleasantly surprised with how much I learned about the plays themselves over the course of Tyrant. I was also thankful that Greenblatt included so much information regarding the historical context of elizabethan England; it added a lot to my appreciation of the playwright's angled exploration of issues of power, something that weighed on everyone's mind, though it was something that could not be openly spoken of for fear of treason accusations. When a work is removed from its historical context, a vital part necessary for understanding the text is lost. The political landscape of near omnipotent kings and queens and the shifting tides of power between royal houses is an extremely important part of Shakespeare's plays that is only seen in its historical context, and that is something that most people do not stop to consider.

Some other reviews complain that Tyrant is a thinly veiled criticism of Trump and the Trump administration, but that is not because Greenblatt wrote a criticism of Trump and called an examination of Shakespeare. It is because Greenblatt wrote about Shakespeare's criticism of tyrants. If you don't think Trump is a budding tyrant but still see the parallels to tyrannical characters, perhaps you should think about that connection more.

All in all, Tyrant is a very well written work on Shakespeare's characters, plays, and the playwright's exploration of political power and I would recommend it."

Tyrant Shakespeare on Politics Stephen Greenblatt Books Reviews

  • Just so you know, Tyrant Shakespeare on Power is the same book as Tyrant Shakespeare on Politics. The one with Power in the title is published in the UK (and ships from the UK) and the one with Politics in the title is published by W.W. Norton in the USA. They have different ISBN numbers. But the ONLY difference in the two is the one word in the title of the book. does not make it clear that the two are the same book, and you'd be forgiven if you ordered both thinking you'd be getting two different books. The content is excellent, which is the same in both, though.
  • Excellent read. For your information, also sells the same book but with a different ISBN number and different title. The only difference is one word in the title Tyrant Shakespeare on POWER is published in the UK and ships from there. Tyrant Shakespeare on POLITICS is published by W.W. Norton in the States. Both are identical except for the one word in the title. If you order both books thinking they are different, you will receive, for all purposes, the same book.
  • Tyrant is an examination of Shakespeare's exploration of government, society, and tyrannical figures throughout his plays. All in all, Tyrant is a very well written work on Shakespeare's characters, plays, and the playwright's exploration of political power and I would recommend it.
  • Spot on in so many ways. An excellent Shakespeare read as well, and perhaps more importantly, a stunning look at the US today, its "leader" on the way to becoming its "tyrant" and, more subtly, an examination of the underpinnings of the society that not only tolerates it, but seems to delight in it. "It" being the unraveling of what was once the world's supreme democracy.
A good if chilling look at how deeply Shakespeare could look into the soul of ANY country and its people.
  • Excellent blending of Shakespeare by a scholar who has the skill to weave Shakespear's plays exploring
the theme of tyrants that is applicable to so many situations today in the world and is applicable to trends
in the United States. A quick and thoughtful read,
  • Rarely have I enjoyed a piece of political commentary as much as I did Stephen Greenblatt’s Tyrant Shakespeare on Politics.

In William Shakespeare’s day, it wasn’t safe to disagree with power. Unlike today’s America, with the protections of the First Amendment, his world was governed by the near-absolute power of the monarch, the aging Queen Elizabeth. And speaking ill of the queen led to swift and often deadly punishment. Instead, the Bard through his plays would examine the ways and means of tyranny, delving into the past and into foreign lands to create his voices that could say what could not be said frankly (“Greenblatt is the Harvard Shakespeare expert who co-founded new historicism, the lit-crit practice that seeks to place works in their historical context.”)

In the vein of speaking obliquely, this is Greenblatt’s commentary on Donald Trump, though the president is not named in its pages. Instead, the Tyrant focuses on several of the same that appear in Shakespeare's plays, examining them in their foibles for the causes and results of their tyranny.  The book is rooted in an article that Greenblatt wrote for the New York Times in 2016. At a friend’s encouragement, he expanded it to a full book. He focuses his examination on Macbeth, Richard III, Lear, Coriolanus and Leontes from A Winter’s Tale (notably leaving out Claudius, perhaps because he is more well-known than most).

While it is ostensibly a commentary on politics, it does not read like just another piece of political punditry or tribal drivel. On the contrary, Greenblatt makes Shakespeare accessible and, well, interesting, as well as providing principles that can be read and interpreted to apply to almost any power selfish politicians or businessman. Reading it is as enjoyable as watching Shakespeare performed well. As Constance Grady puts it in her review of the book, “There is a certain pleasure to watching Shakespeare’s tyrants work, to watching Richard III brazenly woo Lady Anne over the body of a man he killed or listening to Macbeth’s mournful, poetic speeches.”

Perhaps the biggest observation for me, and where the book most departs from other books that more directly take on Trump, is that Tyrant leaves the reader to make his own observations and conclusions. Here is what a tyrant does; is this what we are living through?

Basics of Biblical Hebrew Workbook Third Edition Zondervan Language Basics Series edition by Gary D Pratico Miles V Van Pelt Reference eBooks Reviews

  • Though not off to the best start when I opened this workbook up (I included an image of a page from the introduction, where the Biblical Hebrew quote is mangled beyond belief!), the exercises in this book follow the course work of the corresponding textbook reliably well. Highly recommended, either by accompanying the textbook, or even for self study.

Secrets of the Sea Lord edition by Starla Night Paranormal Romance eBooks Reviews

    • This is the sixth book in this series. It is well written, dramatic, exciting, action-packed, steamy and offers some very big twists in the overall story line that is unfolding across this series. Normally I would recommend that you start at the beginning and read through from book one, Seduced by the Sea Lord. However, I felt this book offered a bit of distance from the rest of the books and if you chose to, you could just go ahead and read this one, even with the continuing story elements. Keep in mind that you will miss out on meeting some wonderful characters, swoon worthy romances and a full understanding of the "bigger picture" if you do.

Now, I am going to be brutally honest. As will happen when you are an avid reader of a series, you can grow attached to characters. When this happens you have your own ideas and yes, even dreams and wishes for your favorites. This book finally gave readers Faier's much longed for shot at love and a HEA. Unfortunately, my expectations and wants for this character and what the author wrote were very, very different. I will state again this is my opinion and it is based solely on my feelings, NOT this authors work because as usual she crafted a high quality read.

Faier is such a wonderful character. Strong, honorable, quiet and dependable. A hero that has deep scars on both the outside and inside but also has a beautiful soul. Feeling unworthy and unlovable, he earned a special place in my heart and I wanted him to get a bride that was worthy of such a hero. Male character or not, I wanted him to get the fairytale. That soulmate that was going to look at him and see through the scars to his heart and know from first glance just how lucky they got in the love department. Instead, he got Harmony. Now I know that there will be readers that enjoyed this character. I did not. Simply put.. I. Hated. Her. I felt that she was cruel and a user. She spent the greatest portion of this book going back and forth between finding ways to hurt Faier and then finding ways to use him. All while, being oh, so oblivious to it all because she's the only one who matters. What she needs, what she wants, her fears, how unfair her life has been. Self- centered much? I know that her backstory was probably supposed to make you sympathize with her, but I couldn't and I didn't. The first time she screamed "Monster", she ripped my heart out of my chest, broke Faier's and really there was no going back. Considering who her ex was I thought she was a total hypocrite. I do look forward to more books in this series because you will never love each book you read, but my heart is a bit broken and I can't say I am not disappointed. Faier deserved so, so much better. This is my freely posted, frank review.
    • My brain is on overload. At first, I was following the plot...then it just went off the deep end. I'm still wondering what the heck did I just read. If this is an indication of how her Mer series will be... then I'll pass.
I only finished reading out of curiosity!! It was excruciatingly boring. Kept putting it down n returning back to it over n over, n over n over....Yeah it took awhile to finish.
This will be my first negative review. Never thought that would happen but like they say, "there's always a first time".
    • In the distant past island people had forged a treaty with the merfolk. Every so many years one of their females would become a bride to a Sea Lord. Sadly many islands were deserted in recent years and so the merfolk came out to modern day humans. They were looking for brides among the modern day humans thru match making companies etc. This is the story of one merman in his search for love and the lengths he will go to trying to protect a woman. Great romance!
    • Faier is one of my favorite characters in this series and I'm so happy he got is own book!
This book is a page turner, you could read it as a stand alone, but I would recommend reading the previous book to get the full depth of the story.

I really enjoyed this book it's got everything; amazing characters, steamy scenes, action, great story with some surprises.

      I can't wait to see what's next.

I received an advance copy of this book and enjoyed it so much I decided to buy it.
    • Harmony is in need of a rescue when thrown overboard. There she is rescued by a merman named Faier who is scarred due to his hard life. When she wakes up and screams at him he is sad because he was hoping she was his mate. However, even if they aren't he will help her get to land. When they get to land they are attacked and things start taking a turn and there are a lot of suprises.
    • I wasn't sure about this book when I purchased it but it turned out to be excellent! Great editing always a plus! And, a great story to go with it.
    • The story lines are a cool twist on hero romance, quick and easy to read and each hook of the series flows together well. The author gets repetitive at times, and somewhat simple in language. Over all a good quick read.
Romance with a little sexual content but nothing explicit.
    • Great world building! This is a sweet story with just the right amount of action and romance. It's an enjoyable quick read. More please!
